INDIAN RAILWAYS
Indian Railways has more than 64,215 kilometres (39,901 mi) of track and 7,083 stations. It has the world's fourth largest railway network after those of the United States, Russia and China. The railways traverse the length and breadth of the country and carry over 25 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of freight daily. It is one of the world's largest commercial or utility employers, with more than 1.6 million employees. As to rolling stock, IR owns over 230,000 (freight) wagons, 60,000 coaches and 9,000 locomotives. Railways were first introduced to India in 1853. By 1947, the year of India's independence, there were forty-two rail systems. In 1951 the systems were nationalized as one unit, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. IR operates both long distance and suburban rail systems on a multi-gauge network of broad, metre and narrow gauges. It also owns locomotive and coach production facilities. Indian Railways is a department owned and controlled by the Government of India, via the Ministry of Railways. Indian Railways is divided into zones, which are further sub-divided into divisions.

1. Central Railways (CR) - Mumbai, Bhusawal, Pune, Solapur, Nagpur
2. East Central Railways (ECR) - Danapur, Dhanbad, Mughalsarai, Samastipur, - Sonpur
3. East Coast Railways (ECOR) - Khurda Road, Sambalpur, Visakhapatnam
3. Eastern Railways (ER) - Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol, Malda
4. North Central Railways (NCR) - Allahabad, Agra, Jhansi
5. North Eastern Railways (NER) - Izzatnagar, Lucknow, Varanasi
6. North Western Railways (NWR) - Jaipur, Ajmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur
7. Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) - Alipurduar, Katihar, Rangia, Lumding, Tinsukia
8. Northern Railways (NR) - Delhi, Ambala, Firozpur, Lucknow, Moradabad
9. South Central Railways (SCR) - Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Guntakal, Guntur, Nanded, Vijayawada
10.South East Central Railways (SECR) - Bilaspur, Raipur, Nagpur
11.South Eastern Railways (SER) - Adra, Chakradharpur, Kharagpur, Ranchi
12.South Western Railways (SWR) - Hubli, Bangalore, Mysore
13.Southern Railways (SR) - Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Palakkad, Salem, Trivandrum
14.West Central Railways (WCR) - Jabalpur, Bhopal, Kota
15.Western Railways (WR) - Mumbai Central, Ratlam, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Vadodara
Recruitment and Training
With approximately 1.6 million employees, Indian Railways is the country's single largest employer. Staff are classified into gazetted (Group A and B) and non-gazetted (Group C and D) employees. The recruitment of Group A gazetted employees is carried out by the Union Public Service Commission through exams conducted by it. The recruitment to Group 'C' and 'D' employees on the Indian Railways is done through Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) and Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC).
